Over 21,000 veterans call Erie County home. Approximately 100 of those veterans are experiencing homelessness. Crawford County is home to an additional 7,000 veterans and their families. No one who served our country should ever be forced to sleep on a floor, go without a home, or wonder where their next meal will come from.
Monetary donations go a long way toward helping our local Veterans get back on their feet. Donations are often used toward food and gas cards to ensure Veterans can put food on their table and travel to work or medical appointments. Purchasing mattresses is another common use to keep Veterans and their families from sleeping on the floor. Other furniture pieces are commonly donated, but mattresses cannot be donated in the same way. Donations may also go toward special programs like Christmas Angels boxes or toward special circumstances.
Special circumstances are diverse. This has included splitting the cost of a Veteran's funeral when the family cannot cover cremation and toward an air conditioning unit for a Veteran receiving hospice care. One-time assistance of $200 or less has also been used to catch a Veteran up on bills to prevent utility shutoffs or on rent to prevent an eviction. We emphasize budgeting throughout our intake process to focus on future success.
Since 2014, EOV has helped about 600 veterans and their families, thanks to caring members of our community, and with the help of generous individuals like you, we plan to help many, many more.
